Chocolate Cake with French Silk and Ganache

 chocolate cake

If you will recall I said that I made two cakes for Ethan’s party.  The peanut butter mousse cake…and a chocolate French Silk cake.

Everything is the same on this cake except the layer over the cake is creamy, velvety, chocolate-y French Silk…

Need A Kitchen Makeover?

 porch

I sure do.

Showing pictures of my kitchen is almost like having promo pictures done without makeup or being naked on the internet.

My dirty little secret.  The porch is inviting…My kitchen is awful.  Strong stomach? Read on…

Chocolate Peanut Butter Mousse Cake

 chocolate Peanut Butter Mousse Cake

Ethan’s 15th birthday is Monday.  His birthday is the 29th anniversary of Marc and my first date, too. :)

Anyway, we celebrated it last night with friends and family.  He had three of his closest friends spend the night.  Of course one of the little brothers (of two of the friends) is best friends with Sean and Nick…so he stayed too…and then Kyrie and the grandkids, Amanda and Gabe, begged to have a sleep-over…

That is how I ended up with 12 kids in my house this morning. Read More

Fajita Casserole, or How to Feed a Crowd for Under $5

 Fajita Casserole

One thing that I get asked over and over again is how much groceries cost us.  The cost more since I have been working because I tend to buy some things I used to make form scratch but for our family of 8 (which includes at least 3 very big eaters) and three cats and a dog we spend about 600.00 a month. Chocolate Lava Cake…Elegant and Easy

 lava cake

First of all…I have to admit that I dropped the camera.  Now when I want to take a picture I have to hold the thing closed with a finger while trying to get the shot without shaking.  Easier said than done… Hopefully I can either get that fixed or get a new camera soon.

Anyway, I was amazed.  Chocolate lava cakes look so complex but they are so amazingly easy!  If you have not tried them..this is seriously a dessert that you can have on the table in under 30 minutes and people will think you are incredible.

Which of course, you are.

Food Network….The Magazine

food network

I don’t know if you have seen it but Food Network has come out with a magazine that has, as far as I am concerned, a lot of potential.

I have been a Bon Appetit fan for over 20 years, starting my first subscription in 1980 or 81.  I never really liked Gourmet, Cooking Light or any of the others,Bon Appetit was my go to cooking magazine always.

Well, other than the brief romance that I had with Vegetarian Times.  It was, sadly, doomed to failure when they were increasingly aligned with PETA and PETA was increasingly radical.

Cooking Basics: Flautas

 cheese flautas

While many of you may not think of cheese flautas as being basic they are a fantastic easier-than-you-think addition to your cooking repertoire.

They go together in minutes, nearly everyone loves them, and the filling variations are endless; cheese, cheese and chile, cheese and chicken, chicken and chile, left over beef, taco..the list is endless and can end up with such interesting variations as brie, chipotle, and pecan…or mushroom and parmesan…

You can have your own Mexican Restaurant at home. ;)

If you aren’t hooked yet, then consider that they can be everything from an appetizer, to a snack…main course to dessert (can you imagine pecan praline flautas with cinnamon ice cream?)  There ya go..now you’re getting it!

Somewhere…Out There….

 jam

I don’t know if you remember that song from the Fievel movie, An American Tale.  No doubt it is older than some of you.

Anyway,   I have this dear friend from childhood.  We were absolutely inseparable until we were separated by a move..or two.  We had sworn to be lifelong friends…and as I recall pocket knives, thumbs, and blood were involved.
