Baking Delights: Baking breads and treats for your family

October 9th, 2006

About

Baking Delights is about just that. Baking. Delight. You know… this:

Baking is a way for us to slow down and connect with those we love, and those who have gone before us. Everytime I knead a loaf of bread I am aware that generations of women before me have done the same thing, thinking similar thoughts, dreaming similar dreams, praying similar prayers.

Providing food for our families is so basic, so satisfying that we will do about anything to accomplish that goal. Go to any church potluck and see how many dishes there are that “Miz CLark makes every year! ”

You know it’s true! Here on Baking Delights I hope to inspire you to try something new, to add a touch of originality to the things you make. I want you to be inspired to make the kitchen a place of communication, of camaraderie, of family. When you see the things that I put on my table know that you can do those same things. I am a real person, a mom just like many of you. I have a life that is as chaotic as anyone’s. But when I pull the kids into the kitchen and we make cookies, or bread, or just prepare a meal together it becomes magic. Suddenly I AM Donna Reed and the kitchen is warm and welcoming. Suddenly the world is a safe place and laughter abounds.

W hen my oldest daughter was visiting with her family we had a great time together, cooking and playing in the kitchen. One night we had a water fight, I had a cup and she had the sprayer on the sink. By the time we were done all of my kids were involved, as were my grandkids, and my husband. There was 2 inches of water on the hard wood and the counters were swimming.

And best of all, we were all laughing so hard we were out of breath, crying, and bursting into giggles for hours afterward. That is the kitchen in my house. That is what it is like here.

This is where it happens. We are in the middle of restoring this house and it has a long way to go before it is the kitchen of my dreams. It is rarely as clean as I would like. It is never quiet…except early in the morning. In the winter Marc often comes down before I get up and starts a fire for me and it sit in front of it and read my Bible and pray. Here it is from the other direction:

So. I don’t have a chef’s kitchen, I sometimes use butter knives to tighten screws, and most often the table looks just like it does right here- or worse.

Baking Delights is about family, and love, and sticky toddler kisses/ It is about chocolate fingerprints on the fridge, plastic chairs that you can hose off, and especially banana splits for dinner once in awhile. Water fights, heart to heart conversations over coffee in the middle of the night. The kitchen is the heart of the home and baking is the heart of the kitchen.

Welcome.
