Honig-Johannisbrot Laib
Uh… yeah. Don’t ask me how to pronounce that. I believe it’s German… tried Google-ing it, but that didn’t exactly… work. I think “laib” is loaf… and I think “honig” is honey… I think “johannisbrot” might be referring to… ok, this is closer to a wild guess than an educated one, because I only saw bits of a German Menu Guide that came up in the search, and I couldn’t open the link for some reason… Anyway, I think it might be referring to the pods of the honey locust tree, which are called “St. John’s bread” in some countries in Europe. These pods are ground and used as what we know as carob powder. St. John’s feast day, his birthday, is June 24th.
I didn’t like this very much, but, (major surprise) my little sister did. Perhaps it is an acquired taste. At any rate, she ‘acquired’ it much faster than I did. Mum liked it, too.
2 tsp sesame oil
1 cup honey
2 cups whole wheat flour
2 tsp baking powder
2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 egg
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup carob powder
1 tbsp grated orange rind
Preheat the oven to 300 degrees.
Combine oil and honey in a large bowl.
In a smaller bowl, mix flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add to the oil/honey. Beat the egg and milk together, before adding, followed by the carob powder and orange rind. Pour into a greased loaf pan, and dust the top with some more carob powder.
Bake for 70 to 90 minutes, or until a skewer inserted in the center comes out clean.

Don’t know FOR SURE about the pronounciation of first and last, but johannisbrot definitely means “John’s bread” and is pronounced “YO-hohn-E-z Br-oht”. That’s the best way I know to type how it is pronounced. I think the loaf/Laib Is something like “Lay-pb”. and the Honig/Honey like “hon-ic”. But I can’t always pronounce things right. :)
I’m going to bookmark this along with the hundreds of others from your site. This one I intend to make very soon. It sounds exactly like something I would make. Sesame, Carob and whole wheat flour? Me all the way! The only things is that I am out of honey and also have a thing about baking honey. That is if it is a living honey. The store bought pre-cooked honey? oh yes I will. I may just get some to make this!
